June 2008 Dear Parents, In three weeks, we will have again completed another school year. For those of you for whom middle school was a new experience, I hope it was a positive one. Sixth grade is exciting, scary, and usually lots of fun. Middle school is a time of growth in several areas. Kids are becoming the adults they are going to be and we are working to be your partners in helping them achieve their hopes and dreams. They will all return looking much older and more mature in the fall. During the summer, please stress reading. Students should read widely. Reading is becoming more important, not less. Reading on line requires a new level of literacy and all the academic reading that lies ahead requires practice. If your child is interested in non-fiction, that’s wonderful. Encourage them to read the newspaper, maybe develop an interest in a particular columnist. Reading should be enjoyable. If your child is not a reader, encourage reading in short time segments, ten to fifteen minutes spread over the day. Read with them. Read to them. Most people enjoy being read to. As parents many of us, myself included, read to our children a lot less as they become competent readers. However, you can always find something they will enjoy hearing that is too difficult for them to read. Most of all, enjoy your children. They are growing up so quickly. Set aside family time and make it sacred. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Go to a movie, go out for ice cream, take a walk, wash the car. Listen to them and reserve judgment. Have a great summer! Martha Shaw, Principal |
