6th grade Exploratory Visual Art
Over the course of 9 weeks, basic visual art foundation skills and preliminary exposure to drawing and painting are stressed. Projects are multi cultural, reference art history, outline general process, and examine the elements and principles of design. Students in this class strive to develop greater problem solving skills and become creatively independent within basic project guidelines. Regular vocabulary quizzes, end of unit tests, sketchbook participation, and reflective writing should be anticipated.
7th grade Exploratory Visual Art
Over the course of 12 weeks the 7th grade exploratory visual art component builds upon the visual art skills introduced in the 6th grade course. Students re-visit the elements and principles of design on a more advanced level. After brief reviews, students are introduced to new and more complicated design concepts. Projects continue to be multi cultural, reference art history, and outline general processes including the component of planning through the use of a sketchbook. Projects and units continue to be outlined with basic parameters culminating with vocabulary quizzes, tests, and reflective writing.
8th grade Exploratory Visual Art
Over the course of a semester 8th grade exploratory students enjoy the culmination of their middle school visual art experience. Students in this course refine skills and concepts covered in the 6th and 7th grade courses. Students are encouraged to develop personal style through projects while adhering to basic guidelines. The elements and principles of design continue to be the focal point of projects in alignment with famous artists and related cultures. Projects and units continue to be outlined with basic parameters culminating with vocabulary quizzes, tests, and reflective writing.
8th grade Advanced Visual Art
Over the course of a year 8th grade students begin portfolio development in culmination of their middle school visual art education. Students in this course expand on concepts and principles covered in 6th and 7th grade in preparation for secondary level visual art coursework. Although projects continue to be based on elements and principles of design, students are encouraged to move beyond basic solutions and explore personal style on a more advanced level. Projects and units continue to be outlined with basic parameters culminating with vocabulary quizzes, tests, and reflective writing. Students can expect to take at least one field trip at some point during the year.
After School Visual Art Academy
The Visual Art Academy model is based on the notion that a variety of tools, techniques, processes, and advanced materials should be made available to all students who show an interest in Visual Art. Each 12-week rotation explores new mediums and materials in an effort to address the interests of all JAMS students. For the 2007-2008 school year classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:05pm-4: 45pm and students have their choice of enrolling in the following rotations:
9/5/07-11/20/07 Acrylic Painting
11/27/07-3/06/07 Recycled Sculpture and Public Artworks
3/11/07-6/19/07 Ceramics (tentative)
