Community Service Essay – Friday, May 17 by midnight
8th Grade Exit Interviews - Wednesday, May 22, 2019 & Thursday, May 23, 2019, 8:19 am – 3:00 pm
8th Grade Activity - Wednesday, June 5, 8:15 am – 8:15 pm
8th Grade Dance - Friday, June 7, 2019   5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Promotion Rehearsal - Monday, June 10– noon -3:00 pm at SAMOHI. Please sign and return field trip slip.
8th Grade Promotion Ceremony - Wednesday, June 12, 2019   9:30 am-11:30am at Samohi

2018-19 8th Grade Promotion Activities Eligibility

To be eligible for the promotion, the 8th grader must meet the following criteria:
  1. No more than two fails ("F") on the final semester report cards (January/June) combined.
  2. No more than 500 demerits accrued.
  3. 8th grade Exit Interview
  4. Completed the 8th Grade Community Service Project (12 hours of community service)
  5. Community Service Essay (Community Service Information)

Proper Attire for Promotion Ceremony

Boys - Dress shirts and pants. Ties, sweaters, sports jackets or suits are optional.
No t-shirts or shorts. Jeans are not recommended.

Girls - Daytime dresses, skirts and blouse, or nice pantsuit. Skirt length is the same as the regular school dress code.

No formals or strapless dresses, no spaghetti-strap dresses, no t-shirts or shorts. Jeans are not recommended.




8th Grade Dance

Friday, June 7, 2019
5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
(ineligible at 150 demerits or admin discretion)

The dance will take place in the school's gymnasium supervised by administrators and teachers and parents.

School dress code rules apply for the 8th grade dance. Party dress is acceptable; strapless dresses will NOT be allowed. T-shirts and shorts are NOT recommended. Students who violate the dress code will not be admitted to the dance.

Admission to the dance is free. There will be catered food, drinks, and dessert.

8th Grade Activity

Wednesday, June 5, 2019
(ineligible at 150 demerits or admin discretion)

This will be a full-day activity for those 8th grade students who are eligible and wish to participate. Students not attending the 8th grade event are still expected to come to school.



Promotion Rehearsal

Monday, June 10, 2019
(ineligible at 500 demerits or admin discretion) The practice will be held in the afternoon at Samohi and the students will be dismissed from Samohi at 3 pm.

Students will run through the entire promotion ceremony to know which teacher they are walking with for the promotion ceremony.

Promotion tickets will be distributed at the end of the promotion ceremony rehearsal.

Student attendance at the rehearsal is required for participation in the Promotion Ceremony.

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony

Wednesday, June 12, 2019
8th Grade Promotion Ceremony, 9:30 am at Samohi, Barnum Hall
(ineligible at 500 demerits or admin discretion)

The ceremonies will begin at 9:30 am. Students should arrive no later than 8:45 am. Parking may be limited in the immediate area, so plan to share a ride and allow time to park.

Each eligible student will receive 2 tickets to the Promotion Ceremony. Extra tickets will be distributed based on availability by a drawing held before the tickets are distributed. Every guest, regardless of age, MUST have a ticket to enter Barnum hall. This includes infants and children even if you plan to have them sit on your lap. This is a requirement of Barnum Hall.

Seating is on a first come, first serve basis. If your family needs more tickets, we encourage you to communicate with other families to give/receive tickets.

Please be respectful of others by remaining in your seat and not blocking aisles to get a picture of your child. Pictures can be taken at the end of the ceremony.
